AJW Builders

Alex Wynstra, founder of AJW Builders, is passionate about his craft and committed to supporting local businesses throughout Whatcom County. He grew up in the City of Lynden, just 20 minutes away from Larrabee Springs, learning the value of hard work and the importance of community as he watched his family run their own businesses: DeWard & Bode, Lynden Sheet Metal, the Dutch Bakery, Dutch Village Mall, Dutch Mother Restaurant and the Sumas Mountain Village Restaurant and gas station. After graduating from Lynden Christian High School Alex got his business degree from Calvin College, MI, where he met his wife Kristin.

When he returned home, he went to work for his family’s business running payroll and managing the bookkeeping, helping to establish the Homestead Fitness Center and opening his own fitness center in Ferndale, Pacific Fitness, which is still operating as Everyday Fitness in the Carnation Building. In 1996, he and his wife moved to Michigan to help her family upon learning his father-in-law was sick. Alex worked nights loading trucks and days painting to support his family and then ended up landing a job with Eastbrook Homes. Working under the industry genius Brad Mooney, Alex cut his teeth in construction management for Eastbrook Homes, learning the systems required to build 500+ new homes per year.

In 2004, Alex and Kristin returned to Whatcom County, where Alex continued his work in the construction industry before founding his own business, Everkept, with partners Tim Wiersma and Bud Ammons in 2010. Applying his business degree with the knowledge he learned from Eastbrook Homes, he and his partners built in Ferndale, before landing two major jobs: 50 senior living apartments for Bryce Park in Lynden and 127 homes for the Reserve at Cordata under Caitac USA. In 2015, Alex left Everkept and founded AJW Builders, dedicating his time and energy to building Washington’s largest green-built, solar community, Larrabee Springs, for Caitac USA, where he remains today.

AJW Builders is committed to hiring local contractors and sourcing as many local materials as possible to produce high-quality, affordable homes for the Whatcom County community.

Alex and Kristin Wynstra are proud parents of their children Hannah, Nathan, Jordan, Emma and Jessa and they thoroughly enjoy spending time with their grandchildren, Erin and Reagan.

Caitac USA

When the founding owner of Caitac Corporation visited Bellingham traveling from Japan, he saw the impressive vistas of Mt. Baker and decided that this was where he wanted to put down roots in the United States.

Caitac USA Corp. is a privately held company, active in Bellingham and Whatcom County since 1989. In 1990, Caitac founder, Hirofumi Kaihata, and CEO, Masaji Kaihata, were named honorary citizens by the City of Bellingham.

Caitac Manufacturing Inc. was established at the end of 1989 and built operations for an apparel manufacturing facility in the Cordata area of Bellingham in 1990. Employing as many as 125 area residents until the plant ceased production in 2000.

Filled with vision and passion for the Cordata community, Caitac built the North Bellingham Golf Course in 1995. The 18-hole public golf facility naturally integrates the historic Wilder Ranch with flowering meadows and gently rolling fairways.

Since starting Caitac USA in 1989, the company has grown its holdings and operates many properties and businesses in Bellingham, including the Pacific Meridian Plaza, Holiday Inn Express Bellingham, Newport Apartments and City Gym.

Larrabee Springs Inc. was established in 2008 by Caitac and has developed over 375 new homes, which include some of Bellingham’s smartest, most energy-efficient homes.

As a leading home builder in Whatcom County, Larrabee Springs prides itself on setting strong standards for sustainability in the new home construction market and has included Solar Systems on each home since 2016.

Caitac USA/Larrabee Springs has been a member of the Building Industry Association of Washington and Whatcom County since 2015.
